Fibromyalgia is a poorly understood yet increasingly common pain condition that is difficult to treat. Tai chi is a mind–body practice that involves physical movements, breathing techniques, and cognitive tools aimed at moving vital energy (“qi”) throughout the body. Researchers conducted this single-blind, controlled trial to evaluate the benefits of tai chi in fibromyalgia. They randomized 66 adults with fibromyalgia to 12 weeks of either tai chi or wellness education and stretching. The primary outcome was the change in the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire score (FIQ; a measure of overall disease severity) at 12 weeks.
