Following a Mediterranean diet has been associated with lower rates of various vascular risk factors, but little research has focused on the effects of this diet on stroke. These investigators explored the effects of a Mediterranean diet on brain infarcts seen on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). From a cohort of ethnically diverse, community-dwelling elders (aged ≥65 at baseline) recruited for a larger study on aging and dementia, 702 participants (mean age, 80; about 27% white, 35% African American, and 36% Hispanic) underwent systematic MRI examinations and completed a standardized, previously validated dietary questionnaire. Participants' diets were classified as being in low, medium, or high compliance with a Mediterranean diet.
