Our understanding of the risks of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs), particularly the risk of hemorrhage, is limited. Two research groups now report on attempts to characterize this risk.
Flemming and colleagues retrospectively identified patients with the radiographic diagnosis of CCM over a 10-year period (1989–1999) at their hospital. The researchers reviewed hospital records to obtain follow-up information between 2000 and 2003, in addition to thorough demographic and medical information. Follow-up information for patients without records was obtained by mail and phone surveys and review of records at other hospitals. Median follow-up was 7.3 years.
