One of the most common underrecognized and undertreated symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD) is constipation. This often-embarrassing and neglected issue results in substantial disability. Now, researchers have conducted a preliminary, manufacturer-funded, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial testing the efficacy and tolerability of lubiprostone for constipation in this patient population. Lubiprostone is FDA-approved for chronic constipation. The 54 patients with PD and constipation underwent dose titration for 2 weeks and returned at 4 weeks for efficacy analysis.
