The role of statins in long-term prevention of stroke is established, but the use of statins in the hospital for patients with recent stroke has been less studied. Now, researchers have studied the outcomes of 12,689 patients with stroke admitted to any of several hospitals during a 7-year period. Use of statins before admission for stroke and during the index admission was recorded.
Patients who were taking statins before or during the hospital admission for stroke had an improved chance of being discharged home (adjusted odds ratio, 1.38) or being discharged to home or a rehabilitation facility (AOR, 2.08).
