Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) who have had bilateral subthalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) often develop gait disorders that are difficult to treat. To assess the effect of the stimulant methylphenidate on new-onset gait issues in these patients, researchers conducted a partially manufacturer-funded, multicenter, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. They enrolled 69 patients with PD who had severe gait disorders and freezing of gait after DBS, despite optimal treatment in an expert center.
