Soy products have long been suggested as an alternative to hormone therapy for treatment of menopausal symptoms. Findings regarding the effect of dietary or supplemental soy consumption on cognition in the published literature have been variable. In this randomized, controlled clinical trial of 350 postmenopausal women (age range, 45–92; mean age, 61), researchers evaluated the effect of 2.5 years of treatment with soy supplements on global cognition as a secondary endpoint in a study designed primarily to assess the progression of subclinical atherosclerosis.
