Although carotid artery stenting (CAS) has developed into a credible alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for the treatment of carotid artery stenosis, we know little about the comparative durability of these two procedures. To compare the rates of restenosis after CAS and CEA, investigators have now assessed serial carotid ultrasound measurements from the recent, partially industry-funded Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy versus Stenting Trial (CREST). CREST enrolled patients with both symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis at 117 North American centers.
