Performance on tasks intended to assess cognition and measures of mood symptoms are related. At least half of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer disease (AD), and perhaps a higher proportion of those with vascular dementia (VaD), experience depressive symptoms. The association between depression and dementia remains unclear: They may both be symptoms of common pathology, depression might be a reaction to cognitive and functional status changes, or depression may contribute to the emergence and progression of cognitive symptoms.
