As HIV infection progresses, symptoms of HIV-associated dementia and its milder forms, such as asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment and mild neurocognitive disorder, may develop. Combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has decreased the incidence of HIV-associated dementia, but the prevalence has increased due to the increased life span of HIV-infected patients. Specific treatment of these disorders remains elusive.
