In recent years much attention has been given to improving the formulations of carbidopa/levodopa to provide better overall symptomatic control of Parkinson disease. In this manufacturer-funded, multicenter, phase III, double-blind, double-dummy study, researchers tested IPX066, an extended-release carbidopa/levodopa formulation. They recruited 471 patients with PD who reported a minimum of 2.5 hours of “off” time to receive 3 weeks of immediate-release carbidopa-levodopa, followed by 6 weeks of the extended-release medication. The researchers then randomized 393 of the patients to double-blind treatment with either extended-release or immediate-release carbidopa/levodopa, with matched placebo tablets, for 13 weeks.
