Atypical antipsychotics have been associated with weight gain in adults. These investigators measured weight weekly in 50 adolescents (age range, 14-19; 31 males), most of whom were diagnosed with schizophrenia (4 had schizoaffective disorder or conduct disorder) and who started psychotropic monotherapy -- olanzapine (21 patients; dose range, 7.5-20.0 mg), risperidone (21 patients; dose range, 1.0-5.0 mg), or haloperidol (8 patients; dose range, 3.0-15.0 mg). All patients participated for 8 weeks; 36 participated for 12 weeks (completion rate, 72%). Lorazepam and anticholinergics were provided when needed.
