Major depression commonly occurs after traumatic brain injury (TBI), and cognitive dysfunction can occur with even "uncomplicated" depression. Clinicians often wonder whether the cognitive difficulties of individuals with TBI are due to the injury or to depression. These researchers evaluated 74 individuals with mild or moderate TBI for the presence of cognitive impairments and depression (average age, 35; mean time elapsed since injury, 200 days).
