Researchers have reported a possible association between cannabis use and adolescent onset of schizophrenia, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) has shown diminished volumes in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in schizophrenia patients. These investigators compared MRS findings and cognition in 13 otherwise healthy male recreational users of cannabis and in 13 male nonusers (mean age, 22.5).
Twelve users and 10 nonusers had good-quality MRS scans. Researchers performed hair analyses for cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol to confirm recent cannabis exposure over the past 3 to 7 months (depending on hair length).
