Researchers from the multisite study, Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD), previously reported that adding intensive psychosocial interventions, rather than three biweekly sessions of “collaborative care,” to medications can speed improvement or delay the onset of depressive episodes among patients with bipolar I or II disorder. These intensive interventions were administered with robust fidelity and consisted of 30 sessions over 9 months of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or family-focused therapy.
