Rimonabant, a selective antagonist of the cannabinoid type I receptor, is approved for use in Europe for weight loss, as shown in four randomized, controlled trials. Because of suggestions that the drug might increase depressed mood, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of the four trials, in which mood was assessed every 3 months on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) among 4105 obese participants without histories of mental illness.
