Do schizophrenia or bipolar patients have an elevated risk for developing certain types of cancer? To compare cancer risks in patients with and without schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, British investigators assessed medical records from primary-care practices over 10 years. They identified 40,441 patients who developed six types of cancer (breast, colon, rectum, stomach/esophagus, prostate, or respiratory tract) and matched each by age, sex, and practice type with up to five controls.
