Most research into suicide has been conducted in developed Western countries, and no cross-national studies have used a single methodology to study suicide phenomena. These researchers used the methodologically solid World Mental Health Survey to estimate prevalence of suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts in 84,850 subjects in 17 countries on five continents. To learn about risk factors, investigators re-interviewed all subjects with mental disorders and 25% of the remaining sample (n=48,427).
The prevalence of suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts was 9.2%, 3.1%, and 2.7%, respectively. Although cross-national variation was substantial, rates were similar between developed and developing countries.
