Olanzapine has been anecdotally reported to be helpful for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), but randomized controlled trials with AN patients have been notoriously difficult to conduct. In this manufacturer-sponsored, randomized, controlled study of 10 weeks of olanzapine or placebo treatment given to AN patients entering a day hospital program (4 days/week; 9 hours/day), researchers approached 147 patients, of whom 71 agreed to day hospital treatment, 34 agreed to enroll, and 28 completed the trial. Olanzapine was flexibly dosed (2.5–10.0 mg/day; mean dose, 6.61 mg/day).
