The high rate of binge drinking by college students has become a research focus. These authors consolidated the findings from the College Alcohol Study (CAS), a 14-year series of surveys of 120 to 140 representative 4-year campuses in the U.S.
The CAS used binge drinking (≥5 drinks for men or ≥4 for women on a single occasion at least once in a 2-week period) as a good marker of alcohol-related problems. Forty-four percent of students reported binge drinking. This behavior was associated with missing class; falling behind in schoolwork; and less studying, which led to lower grades.
