Depressed people, especially elderly individuals, are prone to osteoporosis, perhaps in part because they are sedentary. Antidepressants should improve mobility, but some studies have suggested that SSRIs may worsen osteoporosis (JW Psychiatry Feb 5 2007). Two new studies support this theory.
Bolton and colleagues examined data from Canadian provincial health databases on 15,793 people older than 50 with osteoporotic fractures. Each fracture case was matched with three controls for age, sex, ethnicity, and comorbidity. After adjustment for these factors, the risk for fracture increased significantly with current use of SSRIs (odds ratio, 1.45), other monoamine antidepressants (OR, 1.15), and benzodiazepines (OR, 1.10).
