Disabling levels of hoarding sometimes occur in individuals with other symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, but hoarding also occurs in individuals who lack such OCD symptoms. To clarify differences between severe hoarding and OCD, investigators compared 25 patients with hoarding plus OCD to 27 hoarders without OCD.
Most hoarders cluttered most of their living space with hoarded items. However, hoarders with OCD had a younger mean age at onset of clutter problems, hoarded more-bizarre items (such as rotten food or used diapers), and showed more-severe hoarding symptoms than hoarders without OCD, whereas non-OCD hoarders more often ascribed sentimental or utilitarian meaning to their hoarding.
