Small clinical and laboratory studies have documented a cannabis withdrawal syndrome, typically defined as symptoms on the morning after or within days of cessation of use; possible symptoms include anxiety, irritability, physical symptoms, and changes in sleep and appetite. However, evidence of the syndrome was considered insufficient to include it in DSM-IV. These researchers analyzed data on 2613 frequent cannabis users (of 43,093 U.S. civilian respondents) from the large National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions; a subsample of 1119 cannabis users never binge-drank (>5 drinks per occasion) nor used other drugs frequently.
