Multiple research groups have established the advantage of the SSRI sertraline over placebo for treating children who have anxiety disorders. These researchers investigated the effectiveness of sertraline, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or combined treatment among 488 children with separation anxiety, generalized anxiety disorders, or social phobia, alone or in combination (75% with middle-to-high socioeconomic status; 79% white; mean age, 11). Children with secondary disorders, such as ADHD controlled with stimulants, dysthymia, or oppositional defiant disorder, were allowed into the study. Thirty-six percent of patients had all three anxiety disorders, and 55% had secondary disorders.
