In adults, insomnia is associated with, and is predictive of, psychological problems. To determine whether insomnia in adolescence predicts depression and substance misuse in early adulthood, these researchers used archival interview data on 4494 adolescents (mean age, 15.8) in 1994–1995; 3582 were reinterviewed in 2000–2001 (mean age, 21.2). Of the original sample, 9.4% reported insomnia symptoms (“trouble falling asleep or staying asleep”) every day or almost every day in the previous year.
In cross-sectional analyses, adolescents with insomnia were significantly more likely than those without to use alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs, and to report depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts. Girls with insomnia were more likely than those …
