In a recent small study, researchers found that chromosomal abnormalities in children treated with methylphenidate were greater than population norms. Now, investigators have further examined this issue in 63 children with ADHD diagnoses who had never taken stimulant drugs (age range, 6–12 years). Children with recent x-rays were excluded. The children were randomized to receive methylphenidate or mixed amphetamine salts for 3 months. Drug dosing was at the treating clinician’s discretion.
