Approximately 1.4 million people annually in the U.S. sustain a traumatic brain injury. This problem has now come to national attention through the experiences of our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan (J Head Trauma Rehabil 2006; 21:398), with an estimated 15% to 20% of soldiers experiencing mild TBIs (J Head Trauma Rehabil 2007; 22:377). The related cognitive, emotional, behavioral, physical, and psychosocial problems are frequent and substantial sources of at least temporary disability and stress to TBI survivors and their families.
