Two recent studies examined the relation between cognitive abilities and psychiatric diagnoses.
Because single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the KIAA0319 gene on chromosome 6p have been linked to dyslexia, investigators tested whether these SNPs are also related to reading ability in the general population. They genotyped four possible SNPs in 6000 children of white European ancestry (6% with parent-reported reading problems) participating in a longitudinal study in the U.K.; the children had reading assessments at ages 7 to 9 years and IQ tests at age 8 years.
