Preterm birth is associated with a wide range of cognitive and behavioral impairments (JW Psychiatry Dec 19 2000) and occurs before the developing brain has maximally incorporated certain fatty acids. Studies have shown that adding low-dose omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplements to feedings for premature infants reduces the rate of poor visual acuity. In a randomized, double-blind study, the current researchers examined the effects of high- and low-dose DHA supplements (1.00% and 0.35% total fatty acids, respectively) given as tuna oil capsules to lactating mothers; if needed, similarly supplemented formula was used.
