Although patients with severe mood disorders frequently require psychiatric hospitalization, and many are rehospitalized, factors contributing to these poor outcomes are not well characterized. Investigators studied Medicaid claims data for 85,861 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 34,882 diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Analyses were adjusted for demographic and clinical factors.
During 2 years of observation, about 24% of patients were hospitalized for mood disorders (MDD group, 18%; bipolar group, 30%).
