Kraepelin’s original century-old categorization of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BP) as separate diseases has persisted in contemporary diagnostic nomenclatures. Recently, genetic association studies have suggested that the two disorders share some genetic risk factors (e.g., JW Psychiatry Jun 7 2006, Dec 7 2005, and Dec 8 2004). Researchers have now revisited this issue by examining two national registry databases in Sweden from 1973 to 2004, which covered 9 million individuals from 2 million Swedish families.
