A recent study highlights manic symptoms in bipolar disorder; another offers perspective on treatment-associated manias.
In a subanalysis of data from the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD), researchers examined the phenomenology of manic symptoms in 1380 individuals who met criteria for bipolar I or II depressive syndromes. After assessment for concomitant manic symptoms, patients were separated into three groups: pure bipolar depression (0 manic symptoms; 31% of patients), depression with subsyndromal manic symptoms (1–3 symptoms; 54%), and mixed bipolar states (≥4 symptoms; 15%).
