Epidemiological surveys have generally found high rates of psychiatric disorders among gay populations, but most have not distinguished among gay subpopulations. Using data from the 2004–2005 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, investigators examined lifetime rates of mood and anxiety disorders among gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, individuals who were “not sure” of their sexual orientation, and heterosexual people.
Of the 14,564 male and 20,089 female respondents, 1.4% self-identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual; 3.4% reported some same-sex sexual behavior in their lifetime; and 5.8% reported nonheterosexual sexual attraction.
