Attempts to find a single genetic factor that increases the likelihood of psychiatric disorders or of response to treatment have been frustrated by the heterogeneity and the oligogenic nature of most of these disorders. This study provided some control for heterogeneity by focusing on 15 subjects who had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following exposure to the World Trade Center attacks and 20 age- and sex-matched controls with similar degrees of trauma exposure from the same event but no PTSD. PTSD subjects were not currently receiving any treatment.
