Post-traumatic stress disorder, brain injury, and post-deployment functioning in Iraq/Afghanistan war veterans have become a research focus (e.g., JW Psychiatry Dec 29 2008, JW Psychiatry Jan 30 2008, and Am J Epidemiol 2008; 167:1446). In these veterans, rates of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD are elevated; many who report some loss of consciousness with TBI also report PTSD; and PTSD has been identified as the strongest predictor of post-concussive symptoms among those with mild TBI. PTSD and depression have also been found to mediate the association between mild TBI and physical symptoms.
