Cocaine dependence is associated with disrupted sleep in users as well as in individuals in withdrawal or extended abstinence, when it may also be accompanied by daytime fatigue. In fact, the quality of sleep architecture worsens during the first 3 weeks of cocaine abstinence. To ascertain whether daytime modafinil improves sleep and fatigue in cocaine dependence, investigators conducted a placebo-controlled, government-funded trial. The 21 newly abstinent cocaine-dependent patients were randomized to modafinil (400 mg, given at 7:30 am) or placebo for 3 weeks.
