In addition to affecting academic performance (JW Psychiatry Jun 1 2009), alcohol is involved in assaults on 600,000 college students each year by other students. To learn more, researchers correlated crime statistics with data from almost 20,000 students who responded to surveys on alcohol use given between 2000 and 2004 at 32 colleges throughout the U.S.
The most common violent campus crime reported to authorities was rape (0.32 per 1000 students annually), which was approximately three times more common than on-campus robberies (0.09/1000; assaults, 0.16/1000).
