Low socioeconomic status (SES) is a risk factor for a multitude of psychiatric and other medical illnesses and is associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin (IL)-6. To examine whether maternal warmth in early life affects inflammatory measures in adults, researchers studied 53 adults (mean age, 33) who had low SES in early childhood (through age 5 years).
Researchers retrospectively assessed maternal warmth by asking the adult participants to complete a validated inventory about their mothers.
