Treatment-emergent suicidal ideation is more common early than later in antidepressant treatment. To examine whether early antidepressant response is associated with less treatment-emergent suicidal ideation, researchers analyzed data from a prospective, naturalistic, multicenter study conducted within the German Research Network on Depression.
The 705 inpatients had a major depressive episode or depression not otherwise specified (NOS) and were treated with a variety of antidepressants (mean age, 45; mean duration of hospitalization, 2 months; 49 patients with bipolar I or II disorder). Early improvement was defined as a 20% or greater reduction in depressive symptoms within the first 2 weeks of inpatient treatment.
