Obesity is a major public health problem, common in psychiatric patients and individuals taking psychotropic medications, and difficult to treat medically. Researchers conducted a 56-week, multicenter, industry-sponsored, randomized, controlled trial to examine the efficacy of a combination of two medications already used in psychiatry and addiction medicine — sustained-release bupropion and sustained-release naltrexone.
The 1742 participants had either a body-mass index (BMI) of 30 to 45 kg/m2 or BMI of at least 27 kg/m2 with dyslipidemia or hypertension (mean age, 44; 85% women).
