The events of 9/11, the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and Hurricane Katrina have heightened our awareness of the debilitating effects of traumatic stress and prompted a search to elucidate the risk factors and neurobiological mechanisms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Researchers and clinicians hope that improved understanding will lead to improved abilities to prevent and treat PTSD.
