Several small studies have suggested that depressed patients with comorbid personality disorder have poorer outcomes than depressed patients without personality disorder. Now, in a large naturalistic study, researchers have compared speed of remission (defined as 8 weeks without symptoms) and relapse in 303 depressed patients; 208 patients had a commonly seen comorbid personality disorder (borderline, schizotypal, obsessive-compulsive, or avoidant).
Overall, depression remitted in 260 patients (86%). Patients without personality disorder had significantly more rapid remissions (median, 19 weeks) than those with personality disorder (borderline, 55 weeks; schizotypal, 64; obsessive-compulsive, 26; avoidant, 39). In post hoc analyses, the diff…
