Nightmares and insomnia have been identified as risk factors for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. However, these studies generally have not controlled for psychiatric illness, such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In the current study, researchers examined the contributions of nightmares and insomnia to suicidal ideation in college students and controlled for symptoms of depression, PTSD, and anxiety.
A total of 583 undergraduate psychology students (451 women; age range, 18–29; white, 96%) completed online questionnaires for extra course credit.
