Driving while intoxicated (DWI) annually kills more than 17,000 people in the U.S. Two studies have investigated DWI frequency in problem drinkers and the impact of alcohol and marijuana use on road rage.
Timko and colleagues longitudinally followed 628 people who had requested alcoholism treatment (53% men, 81% whites; response rate at year 16, 80%). At baseline, subjects reported drinking an average of 13 ounces of alcohol per typical drinking day, intoxication on half of the days in the past month, and chronic drinking problems; 71% reported blackouts and 65% reported shakes.
