Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) increases the risks for adult depression, chronic depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and borderline personality disorder. Women served by community mental health centers have high rates of social disadvantage, CSA, depression, and interpersonal difficulties, including intimate partner violence. In a randomized, controlled trial, researchers examined the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) versus psychotherapy as usual (mix of noninterpersonal approaches) in 70 women with depression (chronic depression, 73%); the study population had high rates of moderate-to-severe CSA histories (96%), PTSD (66%), and borderline personality disorder (37%).
