Neuroanatomical mapping of the brain has shown dynamic changes in adolescents from age 11 into the early 20s (Ann N Y Acad Sci 2004; 1021:77), but has not previously pinpointed anatomical correlations of specific cognitive abilities. In this study, 33 healthy teenagers took Wechsler IQ tests and underwent functional and structural imaging at mean ages 14 and 18. Researchers examined changes over time in scores on five verbal and four performance subtests and in their neuroanatomic and functional imaging correlates. The researchers intentionally sampled participants with a wide range of abilities, with full-scale IQ (FIQ) ranging from 77 to 135 at time 1 and from 87 to 143 at time 2.
