Some patient features have been thought to predict the later onset of full-blown psychotic disorders, especially schizophrenia. This “clinical high-risk syndrome” has been variously described as including mild psychotic symptoms; brief, self-limited psychotic symptoms; decreased functioning with a family history of schizophrenia; or abnormal perceptions and thoughts. These features are associated with neuropsychological deficits and altered brain structure, function, and connectivity. Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 27 prospective studies of 2502 high-risk subjects to examine the likelihood of transitioning to psychotic disorders (as defined by either the DSM or the International Classification of Diseases).
