Late-onset depression is often associated with disrupted executive function and an increased risk for developing Alzheimer disease (AD), as is mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is associated with more memory impairment. In a diffusion tensor imaging study of white-matter topology in 35 patients with a first episode of geriatric depression that had remitted (RGD), 38 patients with MCI, and 30 controls, researchers in China examined whether the two conditions could be related precursors of AD.
