After adverse life events, individuals with two short alleles (SS) of the serotonin receptor transporter polymorphism gene 5-HTTLPR appear to be more vulnerable to depression and suicidal behavior than long-allele homozygotes or heterozygotes (SL or LL genotype). In a study of children with various anxiety disorders (JW Psychiatry Dec 5 2011), those with SS genotypes were 20% more likely to be free of their primary anxiety diagnosis after cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) than children with SL or LL genotypes.
