Treatment response in patients with unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) is far from ideal, and many fail to respond to any treatment. In previous research, response rates were generally comparable for cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), and antidepressants. In this first-of-its-kind study to examine whether childhood maltreatment moderates recurrence in adults with MDD, investigators randomized 203 outpatients (129 women) to 16 weeks of weekly IPT, weekly CBT, or antidepressants with biweekly medication management (for a study of maltreatment's role in response to CBT vs. medication, see JW Psychiatry Jan 14 2004).
